Memphis is an interesting town. I think most towns along the Mississippi River have a lot to contribute as a unique place to live. Most recently the trend to live downtown along the River has been increasing. New construction along with remodeling of old building for living space has made living along the River popular.

Phil and Jamie invited Cloody to see the Red Hat Musical in Memphis and I got to tag along. We all enjoyed the show and had some extremely good laughs. The theater was packed and several Red Hat clubs came as groups to see the show. Many were wearing red hats.

Dual County Seats

Osceola, AR built (1912)

Upon moving to Mississippi County, AR , I soon learned the county had two county seats and two courthouses. I thought this was strange, and when I mentioned it, I was told Mississippi county was the largest county in Arkansas, and two were required. In the early 1900 hundreds roads were poor and travel was difficult. Since then I have learned that nine other counties share dual county seats.

I'm still curious.

A Mule Barn

There isn't many of these left, and it's easy to understand why. With modern day farm equipment mules are no longer needed or a place to keep them. This old building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Tribute To Captain Kurt Carlsen

This is a true story of a sea captain named Kurt Carlsen. In order to understand what happened, please read the link Captianstayput. I was a ham radio operator and followed his story as it happened. I later talked to Captain Carlsen who was then aboard The Flying Interprise II. and was off the coast of South America .

The photos are of a QSL card which hams exchanged to confirm the contact. Note the postage at that time was 2 cents. ( It had gone up in price).

Newfondland Screech

From a Village neighbor who is a native of Newfoundland, and some research on my own, I have learned many things about this wonderful place. The people of Newfoundland, their unusual lifestyle, history, and customs are unique to say the least. Of all the stories I've heard the one I'm about to tell fascinates me the most, and it's the story of a native rum drink, it's origin and how it got it's name.

Long ago salt fish was shipped to the West Indies in exchange for rum. The fish became the national dish of Jamaicans and the rum became the traditional drink of Newfoundlanders. When the government took control of alcohol it began selling the rum in an unlabelled bottle. The product might have remained permanently nameless except for the influx of American servicemen to Newfoundland during World War II

As the story goes, the commanding officer of the original American detachment was having his first taste of Newfoundland hospitality and , imitating the custom of his host, downed his drink in one gulp. The officer's blood-curdling howl, when he regained his breath , brought the sympathetic and curious from miles around rushing to the house to find out what was going on. The first to arrive was garrulous old American sergeant who pounded on the door and demanded , "What the cripes was that ungodly screech?"

The Newfoundlander who answered the door replied simply, "The Screech? Tis the rum, me son."

So a legend was born. Amercian servicemen adopted it as their favorite.

The crowd begins to gather about 5 PM, and all will enjoy some of the best pancakes you can have in this part of the world.

Shrove Tuesday is also called Fat Tuesday because on that day a thrifty housewife uses up the fats she has kept around for cooking, but that she will not be using during Lent. Since pancakes use of lots of fat, the day is also called Pancake Tuesday. In England and perhaps elsewhere, the day is celebrated with pancake races. Contestants run a course while holding a griddle and flipping a pancake.

Kodakery

I picked up this little booklet," Kodakery", a number of years ago at a flea market near Hickory, NC. A monthly publication of Eastman Kodak and dated Oct. 1923. A purchase of an Eastman Brownie at that time entitled you to a one year subscription to Kodakery. ( A typical Brownie camera of that time is pictured below.)

I've been an avid camera enthusiast for a long time and I once was a member of the Catawba Valley Camera Club of Hickory, NC. A wonderful group of people who really take photography seriously. I learned a lot and enjoyed my time with them. I must say photography has changed immensely over the years.

I have a son who is a professional photographer who lives in Houston, TX. I often wonder how he ever got involved in photography. World's Great Photographer.

A Man of Many Hats

I kid Mason a lot, first because I like him and second because he takes all my kidding so well. He wears many hats figuratively speaking because he can do so many things well, and secondly because I think his head gets cold like mine when he goes out . I always can tell if he's at Church because his hat is always hanging on his special hook. His wife Betty is equally a wonderful person to know and she and Mason make a great team. Now Luther is another story and I must say our relationship is at best "pending".

Mason, Betty, and Luther are all very special and we are blessed to have them at Westminster Village.

While cleaning out some junk I came across this old phone. I've had it a long time and I'm sure it has lots of history. I did a little research and found it to be made by Western Electric and first introduced in 1907 and was produced for about 30 years. It's an early model because the hinged front opens left to right. Later models were changed to open right to left to prevent interference with the magneto crank. The magneto still works and the bells still ring. To make a call you must first ring central and give the number to the operator. Most phones were party lines (lines shared by several customers and listening to your neighbors conversations was common practice.)

This phone could be 100 years old.

"Driving Sideways"

The Driving Sideways Band from Memphis supplied the music. This group has been with us several times, playing at various functions. They have a great sound and we enjoyed their music greatly. We are looking forward to having them again.

Tita Mama Defined

Tita Mama is really " Sister Moma", but because her younger brother couldn't say sister. he called her Tita and it stuck.

After she was grown and married it became Tita Mama.. I'm sure this is Southern culture, and I'm reminded of Tennessee William's play, " A Cat On A Hot Tin Roof ", there were Big Daddy, Big Mama, Sister Mama , and Maggie the Cat.

In conclusion, she is our daughter, living in North Carolina. She reads and comments on many blogs but refuses to have one of her own. All other children, and grandchildren have blogs, and websites, and all are linked to our home page. Search 'em out and have fun.

The Storm Is Over

It's nice to be a part of a group that cares about one another. During the recent ice storm everyone was looking out for his neighbor. The Village staff worked hard by doing everything within their power to keep us safe and secure. I think everyone deserves a big round of thanks and a pat on the back.

Now that it's over we can look back and maybe see some humor in it all. Dana Overman of the marketing department wrote this poem, which I'm sure will jog your memory of the past week and maybe get a good chuckle now and then.

Making "Light" of a Dark Situation

Twas the night of the ice storm, and all through the house,

Not an appliance was working, no computer no mouse.

The flat screen was hung on the wall with such care,

A giant black box at which I could stare.

The children had moved out, thank God they weren't there,

No cell phones, no I-Pods I would be pulling my hair.

"My gosh Mom, I'm bored, what can I do?"

They'd say while they ducked, and I threw a shoe.

And all of a sudden there came such a fear,

I was stricken with panic, my eye's shed a tear.

No Leno, no Letterman, no Amercian Idol,

So I reached for a book, but couldn't see the title.

The icicles hung on the gutters like knives,

Endangering eye glasses, hairdo's and lives.

When from my back yard there came such a racket,

I tripped and I cursed as I put on my jacket.

And what with my oversized ears did I hear,

But the hum of a generator, who's name is John Deere.

My husband was dressed, his gas can in hand,

Is something resembling the Michelim Man

He snorted and scratched and gave a big grunt,

He said," Get my gun- I'm gonna go hunt".

I let out a laugh and said,"What a pity,

I think it's illegal, We live in the city".

Then from the street came a rumbling noise,

A convoy of trucks, " The Entergy Boys".

Go Linda, Go Lindsey, Go Vella, and Annette

Hey Angela, Hey Teresa, Hey Kendall and Jess

To the top of the poles with their tool belts attached,

They went quickly to work, their harnesses latched.

The clothing they wore couldn't have been better,

They looked like a wheel of aging sharp cheddar.

Their hands they kept with wire in tow,

And yelled when they dropped it," Look out below".

I ventured outside covering my head,

I just got my hair done; icicles I dread.

When I made it out safely, I looked to the skies,

And couldn't believe what I saw with my eyes.

The lines were all frozen, the poles snapped in two,

How will they fix this, what will they do?

I yelled up,"Hey Jess,what do you know"?

When will I have power, I'm missing my show".

He gave me a look that made me declare,

"Geese Jess, what the matter, don't you even care?"

"No Leno, no Letterman, no Amercian Idol,

I can't read a book, I can't see the title.

So chop-chop get busy, why will you not speak?

I need my electricity", he said," in a week."

I suddenly felt nauseous I was going to blow,

Like the last time I ate clams at the local Bristro.

A week with no power, what will we do?

Play Pinochle, Yahtzee or scrub the mildew?

I said to my husband who stood closely by,

" You'll have to speak", he shrugged and said, " why?"

We looked at each other, he tilted his head,

"Oh well" was his comment, "Let's go to bed".

The generator was fine it was willing and able,

It did what it could but it was not Cable.

A week went by slowly and then just as quick,

The power came on like a good magic trick.

I grabbed the remote from the old coffee table,

And flicked on the TV, but alas still no Cable.

Again from the street came a rumbling noise,

A convoy of trucks, The Entergy Boys.

I heard them exclaim as they drove out of sight,

"Our work is done here, let there be light."

You think this all, the end of my fable,

Well I want to know, who'll fix my cable?

The Mighty I-Pod Shuffle

I finally found a use for this devise. It's good therapy for Cloody, or rather we think it could be. Each afternoon I plug the I-Pod into the stereo and we listen for about an hour to Podcasts of various works of literature. Mostly poems or short stories. This is supposed to a good mental exercise for her. Such wonderful works by authors like Robert Louis Stevenson, Poe, O'henry, Kipling, Noyes, Richmal Crompton, and P. G. Wodehouse to mention a few. Most of what we listen to comes from The Clsssic Tales Podcast and may be found on the I-Tune music store. All are free downloads.

It Aint Over 'Till It's Over

I went to bed last night. The temperature was 30 degrees; it was lightly raining and ice was forming on everything. This morning it was still a light rain but the temperature was 34 degrees. How lucky can one be?

We are not in the clear yet. If the temps drop, and it surely will tonight, anything could happen.

Snow wouldn't be too bad, but the ice would be a disaster. Time will tell.

Well, everyone is talking about the weather. What will happen?

Snow---The white flakey stuff

Sleet--- The frozen ice pellets

Freezing Rain --- The really bad stuff. Falls as a liquid, and freezes on contact. Everything above ground is coated in ice. Power lines, trees, often break under the weight of the ice, and streets and bridges become very slick and dangerous. Power fails and we sit around in the dark and shiver.

It's Cold Outside

Cloody and I had a catfish lunch at the Village Cafe today. Friday is always catfish, and as usual it was very good. We passed the Ramey Center coming home and from the number of cars, it looks like the Bridge club is having a good turnout. After all, what's better than a good Bridge game on a cold dreary afternoon unless it's movie watching. We are having some of the coldest temperatures we have experienced in several years, so we will spend the afternoon catching up on home movie viewing. Life is great! Here's to good viewing and warmer weather.

These must be the juiciest oranges in the world and they are sooo sweet.

They are so messy; a bib is included. Just enjoy!

Cloody has been waiting for these treats since Christmas. Gifts from the children. We both say Thanks, Thanks, Thanks. Honey Bell oranges and delicious grapefruit makes for a unforgettable winter treat. Thanks to Tita, I have become an expert at " supreme segmenting" a grapefruit.

Monday night dinner, hosted by the Village Cafe and the Resident Council, was a smashing success. Turn out was good and the food was wonderful. The Lasagna prepared by Lisa was outstanding, and the the desserts by the Village residents were the best ever. I love those pecan tassies by Edna Majors, and I must confess I ate my share. I think everyone had a good time and we are looking forward to the next event which will probably be in March. Thanks to Lisa and all for a great event.

The Weekend

Sometimes being retired the days seem to run together, but the weekends still stand out. Maybe it's because I was in that priveleged group that got to work on weekends, and now I'm free to do whatever presents itself.

Yesterday Cloody and I took a drive over to Jonesboro. The day was cold and dreary with few people stirring about. We met the Smiths for a Mexican lunch which was delicious, and later we joined them at home for dessert. Patsy makes a great blueberry cake, and I got my first taste of Andy's frozen custard. Fat old people getting fatter. Did I say that?

The drive home was pleasant. It's now mostly four-lanes now, and the speed trap though Dell, AR has been eliminated. Coming home I found that just east of Jonesboro I could get four bars on the cell phone, and weekend calls are free. You can't beat that in the Village.

Well, now for Sunday. It's still cold but the sun keeps trying to peep-out. Today was a special day at church because we are having our Christmas musical program. Yes, you heard correctly; I did say Christmas. The original program was scheduled December 17, but because of bad weather and ice it was cancelled. Everyone in the choir had worked hard to present this program, so it was decided they would not be denied, and it was given today. It was a super nice program and well enjoyed. Thanks to the Choir and all.

We enjoyed lunch with friends in the Village Cafe and made it home to catch up on some Net-Flicks. I'm not sure if we accomplished anything, but we had fun and enjoyed ourselves, so what more could one ask?

In conclusion, I must admit I found time to read IF, a poem by Rudyard Kipling. I vaguely remember it from high school. I understand it's voted the number one poem in the UK, and after rereading it, I agree. It make a lot more sense now than it did 65 plus year ago.

Rainy day photos from the car window

Freezing rain changes one's attitude toward photography, and sometimes good views are best had form the car window. Cloody and I are still challenged to find out all about the area in which we are currently living, and we find the delta of northeastern Arkansas; to say the least, most interesting. Some of the best farmland in the world, and great hunting and fishing. If you look closely you may see ducks in some of the photos, and duck hunting is at its best. You people from Texas could never relate to duck chili.

One look at the fields and immediately you remember the old saying, " Too thick to drink and too thin to plow". The levies and drainage ditches do the job of keeping us high and dry but sometimes I catch my thoughts turning to investing in a good boat.

Whatever your thought, it's home to a lot of people and we love it.

Memories

The Seale-Lily Ice Cream Co. was a regional company located in Jackson, MS. Not only was their product in stores, but they also operated company owned ice cream stores and soda fountains through out the state.

In 1939 a store was opened in my home town. I was 12 years old and was lucky to get a job as a "curb boy". We served customers like a drive in, hanging trays of ice cream treats on cars. The pay was $2 a week plus tips. It was a great job as I got to become friends with all the high school boys and girls when they would all come by on dates. You always bought your girl a soda.

The big bonus of this job was the free ice cream from a black guy named " PineApple" who assisted the driver on the truck that bought our ice cream. He would always toss us a pint as the truck pulled out. This was a treat one never forgets.

I know, that's T. M. I. So I'll stop for now. P.S. Seal-lily no longer exists.

New Years Tradition

Blackeyed peas have long been a tradition through out the South for New Year's eating. If you want good luck and prosperity for the new year they are a must. Most often collard green go along with the meal. Since I do the cooking, I prefer the crock method which may not be as good, but from my point of view it works. Have a Happy New Year.

Although we attended the same church in Blytheville, AR as David and Susan, we didn't know them because we joined the church shortly after they departed to Alaska. They were in Blytheville over the Christmas holidays and we did meet them briefly at the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. It's nice to have met a fellow blogger in person, and wish we could have had a longer visit.

No snow, just frozen rain and some sleet, making for very slick streets and walkways. Temperature will be above freezing sometimes today, and hopefully our ice will all melt away.

A Little Exercise Works Wonders

Cloody wanted to see if the use of the stair-stepper would improve the leg muscles to help with her stability problem. Time will tell.

The exercise program meets MWF in the Ramey Center at 10 AM. An After exercise walk in the gym is optional. The gym is a little chilly, but better than outside.

The equipment is old but gets the job done. Hopefully in time some modern treadmills will be in place. If the holidays leave with you some extra pounds; come down and join the fun.

I can't believe it's been ten years since Cloody and Frank's last big blowout. It was at their 50th anniversary that Phil put us all up at the Talbot Heirs to celebrate "Driving the One-Lane."

We relived the day with a skit written by Andy and performed as a radio broadcast by all the kids and Uncle Fred. But I thought the highlight of the evening was when my good friend and neighbor, Al Staehely, took up his guitar and performed a couple of his original songs: the classic "She's a Time Bomb" and my favorite country tune, "What's Wrong With You for Loving Me?"

So to shore up this year's momentous occasion, Al has written a new song that he thought Frank could post to the blog: "Bailout Blues."

How? It didn’t take much of a detective to figure out that Frank’s username is ‘40’ and that his password is ‘department13markdowns’.

Cloody and Frank:

Congrats to you on 60 years together! It is December 9th and on that day I always think of the time that Cloody shared with me the details of your 24th anniversary. Cloody told the story something like this:

Well let me see. Ah! I remember our 24th anniversary. We lived in Houston. Frank picked me up for dinner. I will never forget the glow in Frank’s eyes when he asked me, ‘Andy or Roger’? That was our little code question for whether or not I wanted to hear Moon River by Andy Williams or Roger Williams on the 8-track in Frank’s Chrysler Newport Custom. That car had torsion quiet ride and it was maroon in color. Frank drove us to Angelo’s for an appetizer and cocktail. My drink of choice at that time was usually a screwdriver but since it was a special occasion, Frank ordered me a Harvey Wall Banger. That’s a screwdriver with Galliano. He drank CC&7. He ordered 24 raw oysters. You know they are an aphrodisiac. After Angelo’s we went to The Athena near the ship channel. We must have been the only non-Greeks in the place. We had another appetizer plate that included stuffed grape leaves, spanikopita and feta. Late in the evening we ate a delicious lamb dinner; the wine was Retsina. We had baklava, sipped ouzo and danced until the Sun came up. My gift to Frank was Irish linen handkerchiefs. In my mind’s eye I can still see Frank leading the Greek line dance with his new stark white hanky almost aglow, as it weaved through the crowd. I think Frank broke 24 plates that night. He sang Never on a Sunday with the band. I can still hear his voice and the bouzoukis playing. Ohpah! Has Frank every shown you his Ωπα! tattoo? That is how ‘ohpah’ is spelled in Greek. It means hooray!

Jamie's Smart Car

Just some little notes about a little car.

In traffic people come along side and roll down the windows with all kinds of questions and comments. They often honk and wave.

Yesterday we were pulled over by a cop. Davis was driving and he only has a learners permit. He was frighten at first , but handled it well. The officer had never seen one before and wanted to know if it was approved for Street Use.

The car was parked while Jamie was at a meeting and upon returning she had a notice on the front glass. It was from the local newspaper, and they want to do an article on it, and asked that she call them.

Lots of fun and the gas mileage is great.

The Tree at the Village Cafe

The tree in the lobby of the cafe is impressive. Cloody and I dropped by to contribute our ornament to the decoration process, and now we feel part of Christmas in the Village. The tree ornaments are from residents who come from all over the country, so this make the tree rather unique. We no longer have a tree at home and this ornament was a gift from our Grand Daughter, Percy. We felt it would be appropriate to share it with the Village.

As I walked into the Cafe I noticed the Chapel, and I thought it needed it's picture taken also.

The December Christmas meeting was held in the home of Edna Majors . This time a group picture was possible, and I must say, " A lovely bunch of ladies". Lots of good food and a great time to exchange Thanksgiving stories. Too bad the photographer was not allowed to share any of this, but I was offered some cake and goodies. I'm sure a good time was had by all.

Edna Majors was the hostess and she always does an excellent job. She is a wonderful cook and always prepares some delicious treats, and a visit to Edna's home is always enjoyable. Thanks Edna for a very nice meeting.

The Village was entertained Sunday afternoon with an exciting model rocket demonstration by Ed Hansen. Ed is an experienced builder and flyer of model rockets, and we appreciate his effort to make this event possible. Fun was had by all, and it's a good event for all ages. We hope Ed will schedule another event in the near future.

The parachute is ejected and the rocket lands safely. Because of the wind, the drift often times carries the rocket a good distant from launch site. Ed had a good team of recovery men. You should have seen those old guys running after the parachute.

Too bad the charge to eject the parachute failed and the rocket fell to earth without a parachute safe landing. The damage looked bad, but Ed says that repair is possible and the rocket will fly again.

Rice University Art Gallery

This past May we had an opportunity to visit the Rice University Art Gallery, which was our first.

Our son, Nash does some photographic work for the Gallery and we were able to meet some of the staff and view and up coming event.

I won't attempt to explain this exhibit, but it's an outstanding display by an artist named Mark Fox.

Blytheville History Lesson

Two lessons on the history of Blytheville, with lots of interesting facts about Blytheville and the northeastern delta of Arkansas. The classes were made possible through Arkansas Northeastern College and were taught by Jonathan Abbott of Blytheville. Mr. Abbott has a vast knowledge of the Blytheville area, and did an outstanding job. Attendance was good and the programs were enjoyed by all.

The classes were available not only to Westminster redidents, but the general public as well, and attendance was good. Everyone thinks we should have more events like this. Thanks to Becca Sundy the resident relations director for Westminster, and Sharon Stevens of ANC, and all who helped make this program possible.

Cloody, Wilda, and Vicky for bridge along with a crazy Christmas catus. We have had this plant for a number of years, and it's supposed to bloom at Christmas, but it always blooms about Thanksgiving. This year it's early, but as beautiful as ever.

I'm the missing fourth for Bridge.

This plants stays outdoors in the summer and is brought indoors before the first frost. This year it started blooming almost immediately after after being brought indoors. I tell myself that I must repot it each year, but for some strange reason I fail to follow through. It seems to thrive on negelect, and Cloody loves it.

Lavella Polston McWilliams

Not everyone knows that the nice lady who just rented you an apartment in Westminster Village, was once a professional basketball player, and was redheaded. Say hello to Lavella McWillians, or better come by and chat with her about her basketball career. In her office hang a large poster that tells the entire story.

I think this is the best picture on the poster. I wish it were in color to show the red hair, but maybe being billed as the " Whiz Kid" is enough.

Cloody and I moved to Westminster over seven years ago and we were fortunate to have Lavella rent us an apartment. She has rented many during her career at Westminster.

Lavella is a person of many talents. She has a beautiful voice, and entertains at various Village functions. She is active in the Kiwanis Club and is a long time member of The Fairview Baptist Church, and of course she sings in the choir. She is married to " Bud" McWilliams who is devoted to supporting her in many of her activities. Lavella's mother, Julia Polston is a resident of Westminster, and at 89 still like to play the piano.

The poster tells it all and a click on the picture will enlarge it for reading. What an exciting experience in one's life; one that will never be forgotten. We all want to know more about the red hair.

The All American Redheads. Yes, you had to have red hair to play on this team, but that didn't seem to be a problem. Billed as America's greatest basketball attraction. What I wouldn't have given to see this team play.

No basketball today, just work. Lavella is our Marketing Director and it's always nice to drop by and say hello, and listen to her sales pitch as she rents another unit in the Village. She moved Cloody and me into an apartment over seven years ago, and we are still friends.

Davis Baker Scout Project

Davis walks into a big project. Today it's about leadership and community service. A make-over of the day school play area at Calvary Episcopal Church, and recruit and organize a team to accomplish the task at hand. The scouts from troop 34, friends, and family all turned out to make it a successful event. Everyone worked , played , visited and had a wonderful time.

Cloody and I were on hand for moral support, and considered it a real pleasure to be present. We too enjoyed ourselves and had a fun day.

Several additions were added to the play area that should make it more interesting and fun for all. My favorite is the new water table . A small pond above ground making it easily accessible. Constructed from a couple of jet engine intake covers, bolted together, and mounted in an inverted position, resting on PVC uprights. Filled with water, it's just right for sailing a paper boat or maybe making mud pies. Bring on the yellow ducks. Who knows, the Peabody may have competition.

Dan is certainly does a wonderful job with the boys of Troop 34. A man who is very dedicated to teaching, and working with today's youth. It's truly amazing the support and following he gets from all. Not only just the boys but parents as well. Thank to Dan for making this project a a success.

It was nice having Terri Purvis on hand for Saturday's event. Terri is a teacher at Calvary and had Davis in her class over ten years ago. What an asset she is to the Calvary Place. The fourth annual K-9 kapers Dog Show presented by The First Presbyterian Church was a big success. Drawing a large crowd of supporters; dogs of many breeds lined up to show off for their masters. The best news was that all the entries were winners, and all spectators were equally rewarded with a wonderful time. Even the weather was very cooperative, with bright sunshine and a crisp breeze. Lots of good food and prizes for, making it just another great day in Blytheville. An abundance of home made cakes, cookies, brownies were offered for sale, while the men of the Church sold hamburgers and hot dogs.

Ellen explains to the group how she got her birthday wish, Elvis. Thanks Ellen for bringing him to the Village for your birthday performance. It was an exciting evening, and what a great time was had by all.

Lots of good food and fellowship. It wonderful that we can all get together, relax, laugh and share an evening of musical entertainment.

Just a quick clip to give you an idea of what we were hearing. Shelby is one impersonator of Elvis that really knows his business. He has the Elvis voice along will all the jesters that made Elvis famous. A treat to watch and listen.

Elvis had the crown dancing in the aisles. You know that kind of music that you can't keep still. I saw folks that I have never seen dancing before. I didn't even know they could dance. If I had not been required to take pictures; I would have been dancing too.

Retired Col. Mary Turner, USAF

Mary lives in San Antonio, TX but comes by occasionally for a brief visit. Her health is not the best and she is currently recovering from hip surgery. A native of Alamo , TN and the daughter of share croppers; she know lots about life. She has a gift for writing stories and I'm sure she won't mind my sharing one with you.

Peaches

There was an obituary in my hometown newspaper. Lenon "Peaches" King had passed away at the age of 68. His funeral was in the First Baptist Church. Mr. King, a laborer, died at his home on Nov. 7. He is survived by his wife, six sons, one daughter, nineteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He must have had a very happy life.

It doesn't say Peaches was black, but he was. He and I played together in the late 1930's when we were three or four years old. Our parents were working in the cotton field and we were left on a quilt in the shade of the wagon. We made mud pies together, and got very dirty as we tried to color me the same color as Peaches. We drank from the same cup, and ate from the same cookie although I was told not to because he might be unclean or diseased. Sometimes I got spanked for my defiance. I don't remember very much of this. My Mother told me these stories and I believe they are true because I have a warm feeling about Peaches.

I saw him once or twice in a store where I was working as a teenager , and we exchanged a hello, how are you? That is all I remember about Peaches, but his death has made me very sad. It was Peaches who taught me that black people are not different from white people except on the outside. It was Peaches who taught me to share food with others regardless of color. And because of Peaches I learned to laugh and play and love. Too bad I forgot all this later in life.

I Think It' Fall

Within the past couple of days this mum plant has really shown off. After a long hot summer, often times not getting sufficient water, this determined flower survived giving us a nice show for the cooler days of October. Don't look too closely for it's probably a little thin; not getting any feeding earlier in the year. We are proud of it, and will do our best to see it survives the winter, and by next spring sprout to again put on a show.

I forget the name of this vine, but it's not the common trumpet vine one often sees. This vine is not invasive, but is easy to manage. It blooms heaviest in the early spring but not much after. I think it's trying to say "Me Too" because it just put out two blooms and this is unusual for October. Just showing off before the cold weather.

The Village Book Club

The Village Book club lead by Thurman Rowlett meets once a month to discuss the current month's selection . This month the club met at the home of Thurman and Cissy . What a treat to see all the Halloween decorations, with most everyone dressed in costume for the occasion . This month's reading was " Three Cups of Tea", with Edna Majors dressed appropriate for the occasion and came with her tea pot and three cups. I'm sure a good time was enjoyed by all. A Mission of The First Presbyterian Church of Blytheville, AR. was the renovation of the above house. Working with Westminster Village, the house was one that was not being carried in inventory and for the restoration by The Presbyterian Church its now a guest home for visiting minsters, and other guests in need of accommodations. The work was accomplished with Church volunteers and the help of The Westminster maintenance department. It's a great project and serves a good purpose. Thanks to all who helped with this project.

The town of Leachville, Arkansas supports the theater in the best of style, folks just turn out in droves. We enjoyed the performance by "His Guys" a local quartet; assisted by Paul Ross of Blytheville with his songs and keyboard. We had a great time. As old Dizzy Dean would say: Don't Fail To Miss It.

Cotton Picking Time In The Delta

Each year about this time I realize it's a great time to be alive. The little group of people who participate in the Village exercise program just keep on growing.

This is some of the members who came out today. They all had fresh ideas from the program about exercise on Monday, that was part of the weekly program on aging. Everyone agrees it's something we should be doing.

If you care to join us; we meet at the RC M-W-F. 10 A M, It's 30 minutes of fun, fellowship and exercise all in one.

Our senior member is Mabel Jennings who's 88, but who's counting. She a real " High Stepper".

We are proud to have her as a member, and I'm proud of all the members because of their dedication to exercise.. Sorry I'm not in the photo, but someone had to take the picture.

It's always a pleasure to have a visit from Dr. James Decanter , who is Pastor at The Church of God Ruddle Road. His message was up lifting, and enjoyed by all. Dr. Decanter has been at Ruddle Road for 18 years.

Paul Ross presented the music for the program and Paul is the Music Director at Armorel Baptist Church. What talent this man has. His wonderful voice and keyboard accompaniment is outstanding and is an inspiration to us all. We are looking forward to his return soon.

Thanks Becca for the nice program. Becca is our Resident Service Director and stays very busy keeping all the programs scheduled here in the Village which are numerous. My calendar stays full. Keep up the good work.

New Auxiliary Heater

Because of the high winds this morning we awoke to no electrical power, and then I remember how lucky we were to have a recently installed gas heater. We may not have lights , but we do have heat. Did I mention the temperature is almost 90 degrees? How lucky can you get?

Ike's Final Fling

Cloody and I have have a son who lives almost in the center of metopaitan Houston, and he choose not to leave town during Ike's passing. Cloody and I stayed up all of Friday night watching TV and talking via cell phones until we lost him around midnight. We established contact again about six in the morning, shortly after the storm passed. We thanked the Lord as he was okay and no serious property damage. Thanks be to God.

As the storm went inland and headed northeast, we felt it in Blytheville this morning about six. No rain but lots of high wind. Many tree limbs and some fallen trees caused power outages through out the area. The damage was minor, but most church services were cancelled because of no electrical power.
